Due to a variety of factors many people spend prolonged periods of time in a state of heightened sympathetic nervous system (SNS) response, also know as the “fight or flight” response. The SNS works in conjunction with the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol and is life saving when faced with imminent physical danger or crisis. However when the SNS is “switched on” all the time, it can be depleting for the body and mind.
Studies suggest mind-body exercise modalities like yoga can help can help down-regulate the SNS response and up-regulate the parasympathetic nervous system response (PNS), also know as the “rest and digest” response, which is associated with feelings of calmness, contentment and relaxation.
This is a gentle Hatha Yoga class appropriate for all experience levels. Expect non-strenuous, breath-guided movements intended to softly create a sense of spaciousness and fluidity, followed by a period of breath-guided stillness intended to cultivate a deep sense of comfort and relaxation.
Please bring a blanket and pillow as well as any other props (yoga blocks, yoga strap, etc.) you find supportive.
